Yara Birkeland is the world’s first autonomous and zero-emission container vessel. Ready for launch in 2020 at the earliest, Yara Birkeland will gradually move from manned operation to fully autonomous operation during its first two years of operation. Yara, Kongsberg Maritime and Massterly have teamed up to build this game-changing vessel. Replacing 40,000 truck journeys a year, Yara Birkeland will reduce NOx and CO2 emissions and improve road safety in a densely populated urban area in Norway.
The vessel YARA Birkeland will be the world’s first fully electric and autonomous container ship, with zero emissions. KONGSBERG is responsible for development and delivery of all key enabling technologies including the sensors and integration required for remote and autonomous ship operations, in addition to the electric drive, battery and propulsion control systems.
